The area is a flat piece of land with a mix of ruderal herbaceous and grass species.

Soft landscaping

The landscape design, which is part of a renovation project for Building F, alters the street and the garden of a childcare centre in the area of a former production hall.

The design for the street space is based on the idea of creating a vegetation edge along the renovated building, with an active parterre facing the street. The vegetation, composed of plants of different height levels, subtly divides the space and defines places for people to come and sit, while still allowing unobstructed view. The strip of vegetation lining the street is sunken below the level of the adjacent paved surfaces, so that it can channel and hold extreme rainfall.

The vegetation edge along the building is enhanced with a combination of two tree species – sweetgum and wild cherry, growing in two different shapes: multi-stem and full standard. The tree layer is complemented with lower solitary shrubs. The lower vegetation layer consists of perennials.

Some concrete panels from the old building are repurposed and used in the proposed vegetation edge. Pieces of concrete are set in the terrain with their cavities oriented vertically, so that they can serve as a refuge for insects. Some panels are crushed and used as mulch in the vegetated areas. Repurposed panels are also used as simple modular furniture placed in bays in the paved area near the parterre.
