Jihlava HSR Terminal

The terminal building is set in the landscape of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands with humbleness, becoming a gateway to the town of Jihlava. It has been designed with respect to the landscape, upon careful analysis of its values. The compact design preserves as much as possible of the surrounding landscape. A new cycle path connects the existing routes, following the Zlatý Potok stream, where passengers can enjoy a water landscape with wetlands and pools.

All modes of transport are connected in one hub to minimise transfer time. In the first stage, only the terminal building with the check-in hall, platforms, car park and access roads will be built; the surrounding landscape will be preserved and some new functions added. The passage under the highway is designed for people and wildlife.

The check-in hall is the central space of the terminal, connects all modes of transport and is the main transit space. The linear character of the hall makes wayfinding easy and naturally takes passengers to their destinations. The sheltered space makes for comfortable transfers.

The bridge is a new landmark on the highway connecting Prague and Brno. It has been optimised for dynamic loads generated by rail traffic, has a low structural height with respect to the clearance, and the solution is favourable in terms of cost effectiveness. The overpass reflects the architecture of the bridge, forming a thin line in the landscape.

Vegetation is an essential part of the terminal building with climbers on the façade, roof vegetation on the staircases and on the roof of the car park.

We have designed a generous range of wildlife habitats which, at the same time, are outdoor spaces for people. There are places with full-grown vegetation as well as open landscape. We respect the moisture gradient: water – moist soil habitat – intermediate habitat – dry habitat. Thistle meadows / mead wort meadows – moor grass meadows -– oatgrass meadows – matgrass meadows. We preserve the full-grown oaks, relics of a cultural landscape.

One of the points the jury appreciates: landscape design respecting the morphology and wildlife corridor.
