The design creates a lively ground floor for a wide range of users, and links the project area with its surroundings. To make the area a visually coherent whole, we follow up on the geometry and materials used in the north-eastern part of the site, occupied by a recent project by Rusina Frei + Partero.
Mature trees, which will provide shade in the summer, are the key element of the design. These include the existing plane trees in Karolinská Street and those lining the Pobřežní cesta Street. A strip of vegetation between the buildings and the cycle path will be composed of perennials, grasses and low-growing shrubs. On the waterfront, all invasive species will be removed gradually and the grassy areas will be maintained by regular cutting.
Karolinská Street
An important aspect of the project is introducing traffic-calming measures in Karolinská Street and creating a shared living space intended primarily for pedestrians.
The design for Karolinská Street has to take into account limitations resulting from the surrounding buildings and their underground structures. The desired calming effect is thus achieved by unifying the ground floor height levels and dividing the paved area into several segments, creating a “patchwork” of lively retail spaces.
Zábranská Street
Zábranská Street is the main access route and view axis from Karlín to the river embankment and the project area. It is important to open it up to people as much as possible and to clearly define access to the project area from the south. A new bicycle lane is added, connecting the area to the new Štvanice footbridge and the existing cycle path.
Danube House corner
The access route from the West offers an impressive view of the sharp corner of the Danube House building. The space above the Danube House, in front of the anti-flood wall, is an active zone with an outdoor workout area. The ground floor design for the Danube House responds to the interior design by the British studio Gillespies, which plays on the idea of waves on the river. This is why, on the northern side, the sharp geometry of the paved areas gives way to wave-like lines separating the paved surfaces from the plantings.
Waterfront
The design proposes to restore a stone-paved waterfront pathway that will improve pedestrian access and take some traffic off the cycle path. Wooden elements are used in this part of the area, including seating steps and a wooden deck.
