STUDY OF THE ŠKOLNÍ PEDESTRIAN ZONE, INCLUDING V DOMCÍCH PARK
The study addresses the revitalisation of a key public space in the immediate vicinity of Louny Elementary School on Školní Street, together with the adjacent park between V Domcích Street and the railway tracks. The two areas are connected by an underpass beneath V Domcích Street and form an important pedestrian axis linking the Nad Tratí residential neighbourhood with the town centre. The aim is to create a safe, welcoming and functional environment for the everyday circulation of children, parents and local residents. The pedestrian zone serves as a meeting and waiting space in front of the school, connects to a neighbouring kindergarten and special needs kindergarten, and also is a crucial part of the wider pedestrian network.
The current layout dates back to the 1980s and no longer meets contemporary standards for public space quality, safety and environmental design. The study therefore proposes a comprehensive redesign of both the pedestrian zone and the adjacent park, with an emphasis on legibility, greenery, convenience and integration with the surrounding area. The proposal also responds to the planned revitalisation of the park around the Luna Spring, which is intended to become a new recreational destination and part of the renewal of Louny’s spa tradition. The redesign of the Školní pedestrian zone is thus an important step towards restoring the identity and attractiveness of this part of the town. The design transforms the pedestrian zone and V Domcích Park into a contemporary, safe and welcoming public space that naturally connects the school complex, both kindergartens and the Nad Tratí residential neighbourhood with the town centre.
The main principle is to calm the space in front of the school and make it more legible, introduce areas for play and recreation, plant new greenery, and create a clear pedestrian route leading to the underpass and the park. The park is conceived as a tranquil retreat for residents and schoolchildren, with an emphasis on natural character, shade, water features and places for short stays. Both areas are unified through a consistent use of street furniture, surfaces and planting, aligned with the character of the town centre and the planned park at the Luna Spring. The study creates a cohesive and high-quality public space that supports everyday circulation, social interaction and time spent in green surroundings.
