Motol Oncology Centre, Prague

Existing situation

The area is a south-oriented, slightly sloping plot, its park-type vegetation complementing the original design of the oncology building. Dense groups of broad-leaved, deciduous and fruit trees and shrubs predominate here, alternating with open areas of lawn with solitary woody plants. The streets are lined with dense plantings of shrubs on a steep slope.

Soft landscaping

The landscape design reflects the natural conditions of the Motol Valley. The valley with its great geological and morphological diversity is home to a number of grassland biotopes. On each floor, the design is inspired by the slopes of the Motol Valley and, together with the variable height of the buildings, guides the visitor’s view from the top of the valley slopes towards the Motol creek. The different rooftop communities are inspired by the biotopes situated in the building’s immediate vicinity. The rooftop communities include not only indigenous species, but also cultivated plants to enhance the rooftops’ ornamental function when viewed from up close and add interesting patterns to look at even in winter. Since the building is very open, a diverse range of plant species is used so that regular visitors can constantly discover new views. The herbaceous layer, the shrub layer and the tree layer are all represented.

On the ground, the design places an emphasis on logical maintenance. This is why the area is divided into patches of lawn with solitary trees and a woody edge with abundant understorey vegetation. The lawn areas complement the existing composition of the hospital park, while the woody edge anchors the building in space and screens off busy traffic.
